Silversmithing as a New Vocation

In a new partnership with World ORT, JDC- Eshel developed a pilot program in vocational training for the elderly in silversmithing. The beginner’s course focuses on the basics of metal working and improving the senior’s fine motor skills necessary for silver work while producing jewelry and art pieces. Once the basic course is completed, the participants will be encouraged to work and take the intermediate course that will give them the skills to become a silver smith and also teaches them how to become entrepreneurs. Participants are required to pay a small fee for the class.

Our Involvement

Hands On Tzedakah has signed on to collaborate with both JDC-Eshel and World ORT for 36 elders. One of our donors has given one-half the grant and HOT has matched it and both JDC- Eshel and World ORT have matched HOT, leveraging our donor’s gift six to one. The class is on-going in Netanya. HOT visited it this spring and is happy to report that the government and the local association for the elderly will be assisting in working with the graduates to develop business plans to make their new craft into viable businesses.
