Feeding The Families of the Soldiers Who Work to Keep The Suicide Bombers Out Of Israel
The mission of Israel’s Border Patrol is to guard Israel’s border and prevent terrorist infiltrations; to supplement police work in criminal and anti-riot activity and overall to protect the security of Israel’s citizens. Every single day, Border Patrol soldiers apprehend terrorists and reduce the entry of unauthorized people. Their service is rigorous and it is perilous and oftentimes it is only the Border Patrol who stands between Israel’s enemies and catastrophic devastation of more bombings that could have occurred on busses, in restaurants, in crowded grocery stores.

Our Involvement
159 families and 61 individual individual soldiers have been identified by the Senior Welfare Officer of the Border Patrol as impoverished in Jerusalem and the surrounding area. Three years ago, Hands On Tzedakah committed to prepare monthly food packages to be distributed to 50 of the poorest families of these brave men and women for one year. We increased that number to 80 and then in July 2004, we learned about the real increased need and that our numbers still fell short of fulfilling actual need. A few months later we began distributing 160 food packages.
All the food is bought at wholesale or below; all the packages are prepared by volunteers; all the transportation and delivery is carried out by the Army. The food packages include oil, sugar, rice, coffee, canned vegetables, tuna, pasta, canned fruit, juice, chocolate and more. Our food package does not contain all of what a family needs for a complete balanced and healthy diet, but our wish is that the money freed up with the delivery of these staples will permit what little money they have to be used for fresh produce, and an occasional chicken. Single soldiers receive instant soups, cornflakes, canned tuna, soda and small-sized canned goods that do not require cooking.
HOT provides 145 Border Patrol families and 55 lonely soldiers with a monthly food package along with special supplemental packages for the high holidays and passover. 16 families have been taken off the waitlist this year due to the generosity of our donors. We still need to raise an additional $14,680 to supply a monthly food package for the Border Patrol families that remain on the waitlist.
