Nicol's Kitchen

Nicol’s Kitchen is in Kiryat Malachi, a poor Israeli development town. Nicol is a Sephardi woman who feeds many people each day. She has a small soup kitchen with a few tables. Table to Table, a food rescue organization (www.tabletotable.org.il) delivers fresh fruit and vegetables to her once a week. Beyond that she buys food and gives out food packages to a population of 400 on a weekly basis. The soup kitchen operates everyday. There are many Ethiopians there too. When visitors come and want to donate, she has them go to the store to buy food. Underneath the soup kitchen area is a basement (bomb shelter) where she has dry goods organized by product. She also has used shoes and clothing organized and sorted by type and size. She has four freezers there too. Nicol does all this in memory of her deceased son whose picture is hanging there.

Our Involvement

We saw Nicol in action on our last trip to Israel. Her dilemma is that she has to borrow a car to get to the army bases that let her pick up leftover food each day. Gas is very expensive in Israel and she cannot afford it. HOT gave her a stipend to use exclusively for gas and since that time a donor came forward and designated additional funds towards Nicol’s Kitchen.
